RTGX has agreed to lend technical expertise and technology support for the Living Classrooms Foundation’s Perkins Community Center project. The Perkins Community Center will be housed in an historic abandoned firehouse located in the center of the Perkins Housing Project community. One of the many goals of the project is to provide the community with a gathering place for community meetings, after school activities for the children of the community and spaces designed to be used to conduct a variety of learning activities for members of the community.

RTGX will provide support for the design of the center’s network and computing infrastructure that will support classroom facilities designed to give the children in the community access to educational opportunities that will leverage the Internet and other computer based learning. RTGX is partnering with Greater Baltimore Cares, a non profit organization founded by RTGX’s Founder and Co-Founder and that is affiliated with The National Cares Mentoring Movement founded by Susan L. Taylor, Author, sought after motivational speaker and Editor and Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine. The project directly aligns with RTGX’s and Greater Baltimore Care’s efforts to provide mentors for our most at need children and young people. Our hope is that the community center will act as a nurturing environment where children from the community can come and learn and expand their horizons through the mentoring and learning opportunities that technology can help foster. Technology is part of Greater Baltimore Care’s “T3 Initiative” – Technology, Truancy and Test Scores. The T3 initiative is to decrease truancy in Baltimore Schools and increase test scores through the use of technology based learning and mentoring.

Living Classrooms Foundation strengthens communities and inspires young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” Living Classrooms Foundation is a Baltimore-Washington based non-profit educational organization with a distinctive competency in experiential learning—learning by direct experience, or what we call “learning by doing.” The “learning by doing” methodology is exactly what Greater Baltimore Cares hopes to achieve through its T3 mentoring initiative. The hands-on experience of using computing technology as part of the learning experience has been shown to increase the interest in learning and the literacy skills of children and young adults.
